Ariel Inspired Hat

Hi All!

So I made the Minnie Mouse hat for my oldest niece last week and my youngest niece wanted Ariel. So, I started looking all over the Internet for a pattern, but all I could find were links to Etsy to buy a hat. I didn't want to do that obviously so bravely, I started to do my own pattern. I was scared and afraid that it wouldn't work out but I am quite surprised and pleased with the results!

I wrote the pattern down so anyone can try this. Tweak it to your own preferences, and let me know how it turned out for you!

Ariel Hat – Size 3-5 years

Red Heart Soft Yarn – Deep Sea Colour

Size 5mm Hook

R1: ch 3; 10 dc in the 3rd chain from the hook; sl st to the 1st dc of the round to join [10]
R2: ch 2, 2 dc in each st around, sl st to the 1st dc of the round to join [20]
R3: ch 2, (2 dc in the first st, 1 dc in the next st) 10 x, sl st to the 1st dc of the round to join [30]
R4: ch 2, (2 dc in the first st, 1 dc in each of the next 2 sts) 10 x, sl st to the 1st dc of the round to join [40]
R5: ch 2, (2 dc in the first st, 1 dc in each of the next 3 sts) 10 x, sl st to the 1st dc of the round to join [50]
R6: ch 2, (2 dc in the first st, 1 dc in each of the next 4 sts) 4 x, 1 dc in each remaining st around, sl st to the 1st dc of the round to join [54]
R7: ch 2, 1 dc in each st around, sl st to the 1st dc of the round to join [54]
R8: Same as R7

Switch to Red Heart Soft Yarn Lilac

R9-13: ch 2, 1 dc in each st around, sl st to the 1st dc of the round to join [54]

Fasten off, weave in ends

Sew star on hat.

Hair – Cut strands 26cm each – I have about 15-20. Attach to hat by folding in half, and pull through loop (stitch) on band. Pull to side and keep adding until you have enough and pull into braid. If you want the hair longer, just cut the strands to whatever length you like! 

I really hope she likes it! I will start working on a Jasmine Inspired hat for my middle niece tonight. I will let you know how that one goes in the next couple of days!

I am Disney Obsessed!

Last week, when I posted about the newborn Mickey and Minnie hats, my niece Madison asked me to make one her size. I thought, sure that will be easy, just add a few rows here and there. So I did that... and it turned out like this...

Nothing like it was supposed to. So I set it aside for a few days and did some research. I found a great pin on Pinterest that showed the basic principals of making hats for different sizes, so I adapted it to the Minnie Mouse one for Madison. I think it turned out pretty well!

The hardest part was trying to get the ears and the bow to the correct size for the hat. I hope she likes it!

I have also been working on a Mickey Mouse blanket. It will have red, yellow, black and white squares. So far I only have made two red ones (I will need 4 of each colour). I found the awesome pattern on here on Ravelry. 

It will take awhile since each one of these takes about 3 hours, but its a really fun pattern! I just love the bobble stitch. I want to make a Winnie the Pooh Blanket with some bobble stitches in it soon. 

Topic to end: "A photo of an animal you would like as a pet". This is a VERY difficult choice, but I'll narrow it down to two. One that I know I'll never get to have is an otter. 

I am completely obsessed with these animals. They are absolutely adorable and hilarious. The other animal I would like is another bunny. I've had 3 growing up and they are just so cute. I love their big fluffy feet!

Mickey and Minnie Newborn Hats

I know its been a few days since I last posted, I just could not get into the crocheting mood for some reason! I even went to Michael's and bought yarn that was hugely on sale and I still couldn't get in the mood.

Last week, I made these adorable Mickey and Minnie infant hats and wanted to add buttons to them, like in the tutorial. I looked all around for white buttons and when I finally found them and started sewing them on, I realized that babies probably shouldn't have buttons on their hats in case one falls off. Anyways, this is the final product. I think they turned out pretty well for my first ones.

I think they are absolutely darling! You can find the pattern here. It's such a well instructed tutorial.

For anyone who knows me, they know how obsessed I am with Disney. Well, my boyfriend wanted to do something special for Christmas, but it took him longer than he expected so I just got it this weekend, and it was well worth the wait. He just did so well with it! It was wood-burned and then stained in different colours.

I have also started working on infant hats to donate to the hospital. They are quick, easy and work up well. I got the pattern here, and while I don't have it quite down to 10 minutes, they still are quick.

Slouchy Hat!

So on my last post, I said I was looking forward to telling you what I was working on... Well, it didn't turn out very well, who knew you're actually supposed to use the same type of yarn the tutorial says to! ;) So once I get the correct yarn, I will show you.

Anyways, I worked on my first slouchy hat which I think turned out pretty well. I got the pattern here.

Yarn Storage!

I am so excited to share with you my new purchase/yarn storage. I had seen on the internet somewhere of using a closet shoe organizer to organize your yarn. I thought that was absolutely genius! This week, Giant Tiger had shoe organizers on sale, so I went and purchased one. When I got there, I saw they had sweater organizers as well, which are a bit bigger.

I couldn't wait to get home to try it out. There is even a drawer on the bottom to keep yarn labels and books! 

I can't even begin to tell you how excited I am about this... I am such a yarn/organization nerd!

I said yesterday I would upload some pictures of my two beanies I made. They took about 4 hours to complete but they are really fun and addicting to make. 

I got this pattern here from an excellently described tutorial. She even has a video on YouTube that demonstrates how to make this hat.

Here We Go!

Well, I’ve decided to dip my toes in the blogging world. I have done a few in the past, but they have never stuck.  This blog will feature everything from my crochet crafts, sewing crafts, my attempt at quilting when I decide to try that; Pinterest successes and fails, and just day to day activities. Eventually, I am hoping to set up an Etsy shop so you can browse some products I have created, but I need to get an inventory going first ;).

I went with the name “Sugarplum Stitches” because my boyfriend calls me Sugarplum and most of my crafts include stitches (crocheting, sewing, eventually quilting).

Since this is my first post, I figure I will tell you a few things about me. I am 27, live in Southwestern Ontario and taught myself to crochet about a year ago. With life changes that happened over the last 2 years, I needed a creative outlet. In past years, I tried knitting (which I failed miserably at, multiple times), and quilting when I was 15 (again, I failed miserably). 

I decided to look up YouTube videos on how to crochet and after hours and hours of trying; I made my first hot-pad and was hooked! (See what I did there? ;))

A little more about me… I am an animal lover, Disney fanatic, book reader and Christ follower.  My dream dog to own is a bulldog; my dream vacation is Disney, again.  My favourite book is anything written by Nicholas Sparks (I’m a hopeless romantic).
